The Japanese electronics giant Toshiba has stepped into the market for containerized data center solutions. The company has completed the set up of its modular data center for demonstration purposes near Tokyo ÔÇô its first move in the Japanese market.

Toshiba is planning an active marketing campaign beyond Japan. The vendor said in a statement that it is targeting about $240m in annual sales of the modular data center in 2015.

The 200kVA demo unit located in the company's Fuchu complex consists of three modules: two separate typical-container-size modules for IT and power, connected to a smaller cooling module. With IT load at 1,000kWh, the unit's PUE is 1.3, according to a Toshiba news release.

The server module can house up to nine racks, 46 servers each. The three modules together sit on a 2,325-sq-ft area. The modules are built around robust steel frames that allow them to be stacked on top of each other.

Cooling capacity of the air-conditioning module is supplemented by free cooling. The region where the demo unit is set up allows for outside air to be used throughout the year, except summer, which Toshiba says allows it to cut power consumption by about 35 percent, reducing CO2 emissions by about 2,500 tons per year.

The UPS system used operates at 97-percent efficiency when the IT container is fully loaded.
