May: Corporate: HP said it was to acquire EDS for $13.9 billion. IBM has announced it is creating an alliance programme for hardware and software vendors to support industry standards for new enterprise datacenters.

Technology: A construction and maintenance agreement (C&MA) to build the first direct, high-bandwidth optical-fibre submarine cable system from the UK to India, has been signed by 16 telecoms companies. Estimated cost for the Europe India Gateway (EIG) cable system is over US$700 million. Companies investing in the project are: AT&T; Bharti Airtel; BT; Cable & Wireless; Djibouti Telecom; Du; Gibtelecom; IAM; Libyan Post, Telecom and Information Technology Company; MTN Group Ltd; Omantel; PT Comunicacoes, S.A.; Saudi Telecom Company; Telecom Egypt; Telkom SA Ltd; and Verizon Business. It was revealed that Dell was building a datacenter container to order for a customer. Eaton Corporation announced the Power Xpert Server Solution, a way for IT managers to view and manage electrical power in their datacenters and server rooms.

US: Oracle said it would build a $285 million data center facility in Utah. Internap Network Services Corporation, a global provider of end-to-end Internet business solutions, has announced plans to add approximately 15,000 square feet of colocation at a new stand alone 45,000 square foot facility adjacent to its existing Boston datacenter. Digital Realty Trust reported research data that indicates a significant increase in the number of datacenter projects being planned by US corporations during the coming 12 months. Switch Communications Group has announced it is building a new 400,000 square foot data center in Las Vegas, Vegas which it has dubbed SuperNAP.

ASIA PAC: Singapore public sector to call more than S$1 billion worth of Infocomm tenders in FY08. Salesforce.com, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform- as-a-Service (PaaS provider announced that it is building its first international datacenter in Singapore.

UK: New £200 millon datacenter opens in Wales while Telecity Group announced a new £48 million data center build in Paris. Tesco placed an order with Active Power for two Powerhouse containerised systems for use at its north London data center. It was reported that BT's British datacenters will be sold to HP.

Europe MEA: Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) has announced its plans to set up a multi-billion naira datacenter facility in Nigeria in the next couple of months. According to IDC, resilient EMEA server market defy gloom in 1Q08 as virtualization spearheads revenue growth of 4.8%.

June: US: Southern Company, one of the largest generators of electricity in the US announced its subsidiary Alabama Power Co, is to build a new US$20 million datacenter in Birmingham, Alabama datacenter. Bank of America has announced plans to double the size of its 13-year old Platte County datacenter. Microsoft Corp entered into a partnership with San Antonio Water System (SAWS) that will see the organization able to use more than 130 million gallons of recycled water a year. Advanced Datacenters (ADC) is building a 237,000 square foot datacenter at McClellan Park on McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. The USGBC has pre-certified the ADC facility for a LEED score of 50 points, above the 45 points required for LEED Platinum, the highest certification tier. The Planet announced the expansion of its Dallas D6 datacenter adding 12,000 square feet.

Technology: IBM announces a whole range of solutions ranging from financial to enterprise modular data centers to tackle energy crisis under its Big Green banner. Rittal launched Ribat a new UPS battery management system capable of extending the life of UPS batteries by 30 per cent. APC has introduced TradeOff Tools for data center planning and a three phase UPS. Verizon has established its own energy-consumption standards and an associated measurement process for new telecommunications-related equipment. The standards will be applied to certain broadband, video, datacenter, network and customer-premises equipment purchased after January 1, 2009.

Europe MEA: Baltic Data Center, the leading datacenter and information systems management services provider in the Baltic states, has signed a three-year contract with company Vilniaus Duona. CITI has commissioned 48 x 400A, 4-pole Chloride CROSS Static Transfer Switches (STS) offering short-circuit withstand of 20kA to optimise power security at its award winning Frankfurt/Main datacenter.

Corporate: Cisco aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2012.

UK: Research claims that top UK retailers are overspending by £1.25 million a year on the power needed to run their datacenters which can equate to 50 per cent of total datacenter costs and 10 per cent of their total energy bills.
