The Thai Board of Investment has approved two major data center projects in the Chonburi region of Thailand, just southeast of Bangkok.

The projects will see a total investment of 60 billion baht ($1.78bn) to meet the growing demand for cloud services in the region, as reported by Thailand Business News.

The first project, valued at 32 billion baht ($950m), will be built by Quartz Computing, an affiliate of Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc, and is scheduled for completion by 2026.

Further details have not yet been shared for the first project.

Chinese tech firm GDS subsidiary Digitalland Services will build the second data center project, valued at 28 billion baht ($831m).

In a recent LinkedIn post, William Huang, chairman at GDS International, said: "Our investment in Thailand aligns with our vision of advancing the digital economy across Asia. Our goal is to build a cutting-edge data center park that not only meets Thailand's cloud and AI infrastructure needs but also fosters a thriving data center ecosystem."

Specifications of the hyperscale data center park have not yet been shared, however, GDS said it has signed an agreement with AMATA Corporation Public Company to acquire land at the AMATA City Chonbury Industrial Estate, providing access to renewable energy such as floating solar power.

Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary general of the Thai Board of Investment, added: "The government is dedicated to advancing key areas, including the development of clean energy mechanisms. We are currently establishing a Direct Power Purchase Agreement (Direct PPA), specifically designed for data centers, and refining digital regulations to support advancements in AI technology."

Earlier this year, the Thailand Board of Investment also approved $291 million of investment for the data center industry.

In September, Google announced plans to spend $1 billion on cloud and data infrastructure in Thailand. Amazon Web Services plans to launch a cloud region in Thailand in early 2025 and invest $5 billion by 2037.

Microsoft also plans to build a data center region in the country

According to Datacenter Map, Chonburi is currently home to Supernap and TCCT Amata data centers.
