Terremark has kicked off a second expansion project at its data center in Sao Paulo called NAP do Brasil. The expansion will bring the facility’s total raised-floor area to 70,000 sq ft.
The Verizon-owned company said rapid expansion of inventory in Brazil was a response to growing demand in the market. Terremark has also recently expanded its second Latin America data center located in Bogota, Colombia.
Terremark president Nelson Fonseca said the company had “outstanding success and growth” in the region.
“Brazil represents a central IT hub in Latin America and further expanding our operations in Brazil is a vital step in growing our presence in this high-demand region,” he said.
The company currently offers a total of about 90,000 sq ft of data center space in Sao Paulo and Bogota. The first expansion in Brazil was announced in September 1.
Some of Latin America’s most important internet exchange points are located in Sao Paulo. The region’s largest carriers offer connectivity at Terremark’s campus in that city.
While one of the world’s most active data center markets, Brazil was recently ranked as the riskiest of all major markets in the world to build and operate a data center. The report that gave the country this assessment was created by the real-estate brokerage Cushman and Wakefield and the engineering company hurleypalmerflatt.
The report’s authors examined more than a dozen risk factors. Categories where Brazil scored as high-risk were high energy cost and a difficult business climate.
More favorable conditions in the country are labor costs, sustainability and water availability, according to the report.
