Terremark Worldwide is to install nearly 10,000kVA of backup power at its Culpeper County, Virginia datacenter. The company has purchased eleven 900kVA UPS systems from Caterpillar.
Working with Caterpillar, Active Power will deliver systems totaling 8MW to protect the data center site from electrical disturbances. The 30-acre site datacenter campus will include up to five 50,000 square foot datacenter facilities, built in a modular approach based on customer demand. The company expects to invest $55 million to $60 million in construction of the first datacenter, which broke ground in June 2007.
Flywheel energy storage systems store kinetic energy, energy produced by motion, by constantly spinning a compact rotor in a low-friction environment. When short-term back-up power is required because utility power fluctuates or is lost, the rotor's inertia allows it to continue spinning and the resulting kinetic energy is converted to electricity.
