Telx has brought direct access to Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) cloud infrastructure to its Northern California data center customers.
Instead of connecting to Amazon’s cloud through the Internet, Telx customers can connect to it through a direct private network, which gives that connection higher bandwidth, better performance and security. This, in turn, enables them to build custom hybrid architectures consisting in part of their own infrastructure in the data center and in part of virtual infrastructure resources Amazon offers.
Telx’ Northern California data centers are in Santa Clara and San Francisco.
Other data center services providers have done similar arrangements with Amazon. CoreSite, Equinix and TelecityGroup have brought Amazon Direct Connect into their data centers, the cloud provider announced in January.
Joe Weinman, senior VP of cloud services and strategy at Telx, said the deal was about expanding the amount of options for infrastructure deployment for customers.
“Rather than just a single solution, clients can leverage a range of public and private network transport and interconnection options to deploy optimal hybrid architectures, across a range of multilayer network services, utilizing a mix of colocation, private, hosted private, and public cloud services,” he said.
Through a direct connection to AWS, Telx customers can, for example, periodically move data between the public cloud and their self-managed storage solutions. This gives them a wider spectrum of business continuity and disaster recovery options.
In Big Data applications, customers can take advantage of high-bandwidth connectivity to transfer large volumes of data in and out of Amazon’s cloud used by analytics applications.
Diret Connect also enables customers to simply use AWS as an extension of their data center LAN (local-area network).
