Colocation and interconnection service provider Telx has added 21,500 square feet of technical floor to its data center space in one of New York's largest carrier hotels at 111 8th Ave., home to other large providers like Switch and Data, Level 3 and others.

By expanding the facility, Telx is going after financial service clients, such as electronic trading firms, which has recently been a major focus for the company.

Installing their servers in New York proper gives financial companies low-latency network access to some of the world's biggest stocks exchange markets located in the city, such as NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq.

"Our decision to add more data center capacity to our 111 8th Ave. facility is in response to a sharp increase in demand from our financial services customers and cloud application service providers," Telx CEO Eric Shepcaro said in a statement. "With the expanded footprint, we can immediately meet the latency, proximity, security and services requirements of the most demanding financial services and cloud computing environments."

The location's other important advantage is its proximity to a rich section of network infrastructure Telx referred to as the Hudson Street/Ninth Avenue fiber highway.

Last week, Telx filed for an initial public offering of stock to be traded on Nasdaq under the market symbol TELX, expecting to raise up to $100 million.
