T-Mobile outlined plans to explore further M&A opportunities around its fiber offering.
The carrier has made fiber a big priority in the past year, notably concluding its joint venture (JV) acquisition of Lumos earlier this month.
In doing so, the company's CEO Michael Sievert confirmed in an earnings call last week that T-Mobile is set to launch T-Fiber this quarter.
"With the completion of our transaction on April 1 for Lumos, we're now set to officially launch T-Fiber later this quarter. something that's been in pilot for the last two-plus years," said Sievert.
He confirmed that the company's planned Metronet acquisition will be closed soon, too.
However, when asked about future M&A opportunities, Sievert suggests T-Mobile isn't done.
"I mean, we are a growth company. And so what we see is our interest in 5G broadband that has made us the fastest growing overall broadband company in America for 13 quarters," said Sievert. "And you've also seen us show our hand in terms of wireline Internet as having an increased interest relative to other things in pure-play fiber. Why? Because it's a growth category."
Last year, T-Mobile said it expects to pass between 12 million and 15 million more households with its US fiber network by 2030.
Rival carriers AT&T and Verizon have also pushed hard on fiber in the last couple of years.
It was reported last month AT&T has entered talks to acquire Lumen Technologies' consumer fiber operations for $5.5bn. During the company's own earnings call last week, the carrier's CEO John Stankey refused to comment on those reports.
AT&T has previously outlined its fiber ambitions. In December, Stankey said the company plans to reach more than 50 million fiber locations by 2029. That current number is at 29.5 million. Speaking last week, Stankey said the carrier will surpass 30 million fiber locations midway through this year.
Regarding its own fiber M&A opportunities, Verizon said last week that it expects to close its $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications in early 2026.
Mixed first quarter for carriers
The first quarter earnings provided mixed fortunes for the big three US carriers.
T-Mobile reported that it added 495,000 phone customers in the first quarter, while AT&T added 324,000. However, Verizon recorded a net loss of 289,000 for Q1.
All three of the companies made note of the ongoing tariff situation, warning that there could be an impact on next quarter's results, amid the uncertainty caused by measures proposed by the US government.
As for revenue, T-Mobile increased its service revenue five percent year-over-year (YoY) to $16.9 billion for the quarter.
AT&T posted revenue of $30.6 billion, up two percent YoY, while Verizon reported first-quarter operating revenue of $33.5 billion, up 1.5 percent YoY.
