The following content is from an older version of this website, and may not display correctly.Syska Hennessy Group, a large US-based firm that has been involved in many data center engineering and construction projects, has decided to get out of the construction business and concentrate on consulting and engineering.
The group closed the sale of its construction arm Syska Hennessy Group Construction to a California construction firm gkkworks on May 1.
Divesting its Los Angeles-based subsidiary will allow New York-based SH to focus on its core business, consisting of engineering, design, consulting and commissioning services, according to a company news release.
The companies chose to keep acquisition price confidential, an SH spokeswoman said.
According to a gkkworks news release, the combined entity will have total annual revenue of more than $200 million and employ more than 300 workers.
Dan McNary, who served as SVP at SHGC and who has been named VP of commercial construction at gkkworks, said SHGC will contribute more than $120 million to the combined company's revenue.
Along with additional staff of about 100 and several new office locations, Irvine, Calif.-based gkkworks gains several large data center construction contracts from the acquisition, including deals with US federal agencies.
William Line, former president and COO at SHGC whose new role at gkkworks is VP of federal programs, said in a statement that SHGC has multiple contracts with the feds.
McNary said these were indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contracts with the US Army Corps of Engineers, each of which is worth about $500 million.
SHCG's mission-critical business that serves the private sector also has many ongoing projects throughout the US, including a construction management contract for Oracle's new $300 million data center in West Jordan, Utah, a project that recently resumed after being on hold since summer of 2009.
"We work with Oracle as the ... program manager for that job," McNary said.
SH's past data center clients include Amazon, AT&T, Bank of America, Cisco, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Electronic Arts, Google, Morgan Stanely, Sony, Toyota and many others.
gkkworks primarily goes after clients in the healthcare, government and education sectors.
Its customers include California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, California State University East Bay, Oakland Unified School District and Yuba Community College District, among others.
The firm's services consist of site selection, business planning, facility planning, architecture, engineering and construction.
"This acquisition allows gkkworks to provide our clients with the combined strengths of both firms, resulting in a better balance of design, program/construction management and general contracting services," gkkworks President and CEO Praful Kulkarni said in a statement.
"The Syska Hennessey Group Construction portfolio includes the expansion and renovation of key infrastructure projects for the Department of Defense and mission critical facilities for some of America's largest companies.
"This depth of specialized experience will provide added assurance and benefits to our clients."
SH started its construction business in 1996.
The company's remaining subsidiaries are Syska Hennessy Group and Syska Hennessy Group China.
