Provider of security, storage and systems-management solutions Symantec launched a new storage deduplication appliance in select countries and a new cloud-based storage offering Tuesday.

NetBackup 5000 provides source- or target-based scalable deduplication in the appliance form-factor, aiming to help customers use storage resources more efficiently. The new cloud-storage service combines Symantec’s data-protection product NetBackup with a cloud-storage service called Storage Delivery Network provided by Nirvanix.

Brian Dye, VP of product management ofr Symantec’s Information Management Group, said data stores grew about 50 percent annually for most businesses. "By extending the benefits of Symantec NetBackup through appliance and cloud delivery models, we are helping our customers reduce complexity and cost without putting an organization's infrastructure, information and intellectual property at risk," Dye said in a statement.

NetBackup 5000 is the latest release in Symantec’s information-management strategy, which is to help customers protect information in physical or virtual environments while deduplicating data everywhere.

For implementers of the new appliance, Symantec promises up to 50 times more storage savings than traditional backup solutions, a 99-percent reduction in bandwidth consumption and a less-than-20-minute average set-up time. The product offers up to 96 terabytes of usable global dedupe capacity and can protect up to one petabyte of data in one deployment.

Deduplication can be applied across multiple clients and appliance nodes, with back-up throughput of up to 4.3TB per hour per node. Backup options include guest- or image-level backup for both VMware- and Microsoft-enabled virtualized environments.

The appliance integrates with NetBackup, the previously existing data-protection product.

To enable integration of the new NetBackup-Nirvanix cloud-storage solution, Symantec extended its OpenStorage API to the cloud. NetBackup Cloud Storage is an automated and policy-based back-up and recovery solution. It can be used to deploy a cloud-based storage tier or as a secondary off-site or disaster-recovery location.

Custom connector for Nirvanix and Backup Exec, Symantec’s back-up, recovery and deduplication solution for mid-size customers, is scheduled for release before the end of fiscal year 2011.
