US construction firm Swinerton Builders has completed the second-phase of a 93,000 sq ft data center build-out for the data center services provider Latisys in Irvine, California.

Dave Higgins, Jr., senior VP and manager of Swinerton's critical facilities business, said, data center projects demanded mature, repeatable and reliable methods. “This project required us to perform under exacting conditions, including an aggressive 14-week schedule,” he said.

Latisys announced it was expanding capacity at the Irvine site in February. The company said it was adding 12,000 sq ft of raised floor and 1.8MW of power in this phase.

The project included a raised floor with three ramps and one set of stairs, as well as 12 freestanding power distribution units on the raised-floor area, Swinerton said. The electrical room built specifically for Phase II houses three Liebert computer room air conditioning units, Square D switchgear, uninterruptible power supply and lighting control panels, all resting on four-inch housekeeping pads.

Four Energy Lab cooling units were attached to a superstructure mounted on the roof via columns and beams supported from grade level. The Energy Lab units are "hybrid" systems, which provide 1,200 tons of cooling through air- and water-side economization and evaporative cooling.

Swinerton has built data centers for clients like Time Warner Cable, T-Mobile, the US Army Space Command and Intel, among others.
