Colocation and network provider SureWest has added a new data center to its roster. The facility in Lenexa, Kan., is the company's third data center, adding to its two existing facilities in the Sacramento, Calif., area. The new data center provides a local option for SureWest customers in the Kansas City, Miss., region and a disaster recovery site for its Northern California clients.

The Lenexa facility houses 3,000 square feet of data center floor, offering power capacity of 150 watts per square foot, SureWest Spokeswoman Anne Chacon said.

One of the company's two California data centers is located in McClellan Business Park near Sacramento, the state's capital city. It provides about 2,900 square feet of data center floor, which is 90 percent occupied. Second of the two facilities is located in Citrus Heights. Half of its 7,500-square-foot data center floor is occupied. Both facilities provide 150 watts per square foot and up to 15 KW per rack in limited amounts. Both are used for colocation, managed services, business continuity and disaster recovery.

Besides data centers, the company offers a variety of bundled residential and commercial broadband services. It owns and operates a fiber network in the Sacramento area and a hybrid fiber-coaxial network in the Kansas City area.

SureWest is headquartered in Roseville, Calif. - about 20 miles away from Sacramento. It expanded into the Kansas City region by acquiring Everest Broadband in February of 2008 for $173 million. "The purchase of Everest Broadband more than doubled SureWest's triple-play residential base and it facilitated the rapid expansion of our business services," Chacon wrote in an email. "It also helped the company diversify geographically, which has proven to be a good decision in light of the present economic climate and it's more severe effects on the California economy."
