IT vendor Supermicro used its presence at Intel Developer Forum 2010, which takes place this week in San Francisco, to showcase its new 10GbE switches along with its server, storage and rack products.

The company aimed to demonstrate its ability to deliver the full IT hardware solution for data centers and high-performance-computing applications. In addition to the new switches, the showcase included the company's SuperServer and SuperWorkstation products, a double-sided storage systems, its TwinBlade server and the new 42U SuperRack cabinet.

One of the two new Layer 3 switches comes in 1U form factor and can be deployed as a standalone or at the top of a rack. The other switch is for integration into a Supermicro SuperBlade system, including a system using the new TwinBlade servers.

Supermicro President and CEO Charles Liang said the new 2U Twin2 servers had both "green technology advantages" and advanced features. "These features include dual-port onboard 10GbE, 6Gb/s SAS2, up to 18 DIMM slots, and Universal I/O (UIO) interface to support up to three add-on cards in a 1U server to empower our customers to get the most out of their servers without dedicating extra resources," he said in a statement. 

"Green" features of the new servers include power supplies that provide more than 94 percent peak efficiency, advanced cooling approach and efficiency-optimized board-level design, according to Liang. 

The new switches enable connectivity to 10GbE routers, servers, backbones and data centers. Their management interface is similar to that of existing Supermicro 1Gb and 10Gb Ethernet switches for Layers 2 and 3.

Supermicro's new SuperRack cabinet features cable routing to minimize obstruction to airflow and to provide easy access to rear system components. The design incorporates modularity, offering more than 100 optional components.
