Tongyang, a construction subsidiary of Korean conglomerate Eugene Group, is developing two AI data centers.
According to Korean newswire Newsis, the subsidiary made the announcement last Wednesday, saying that it would begin construction at both sides in the first half of this year with a targeted completion date of 2028.
The facilities will be located near the capital, Seoul. The first will be located in the city of Incheon, which is just southwest of Seoul, and the second will be in Bucheon, an area in the north of Gyeonggi province that is south of the South Korean capital.
The Incheon facility is slightly larger, spanning eleven floors in total and a total floor area of 10,839 sqm (117,000 sq ft). Details about capacity were not disclosed.
The Bucheon facility will offer 9.8MW of capacity with a floor area of 10,736 sqm (116,000 sq ft).
Founded in 1954, Eugene Group is a South Korean conglomerate with business interests in media, construction, confectionery, and more. Tongyang was one of Eugene Group’s rivals until it was acquired by the group in 2016.
South Korea’s demand for AI is strong. Many of the country’s other conglomerates are constructing data centers to meet that demand, including Samsung and Hyundai.
The country is also known for manufacturing the memory chips that are necessary for AI data centers, with SK Hynix emerging as the pre-eminent producer over its rival Samsung.
