Siemens IT Solutions and Services and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) will continue to carry out research into new IT solutions in the future, and are extending their existing cooperation to 2010. Siemens has been using the expertise of this top German university for three years, and this is now paying off in practical terms: the researchers have developed software that enables datacenters to use less energy. Siemens is already testing the solution in its own datacenter.
Five professorships in the Information Technology faculty have been working with Siemens IT Solutions and Services for about three years. Their attention is focused on server consolidation and capacity planning for datacenters. The scientific staff and students have been able to complete their first projects, of which the highlight is an IT solution that improves the utilization of servers in the datacenter.
Servers in datacenters are often poorly utilized. With server consolidation, the software is distributed more efficiently to the existing hardware, and the best possible use is therefore made of the servers. This certainly pays off, since, all in all, the solution makes it possible to save up to thirty percent of the hardware. Various pieces of equipment can be dispensed with, while the existing servers run more efficiently. The bottom line is lower energy costs in the datacenter.
