The Mediterranean Shipping Company has installed a new management solution to help it monitor its applications across its two data centers.
The shipping company houses its Terminal Operation Systems (TOS) in the data centers, which link up to six physical distribution locations for the management of more than 4.1m 20-foot equivalent containers units a year being carried by vessels, rail, trucks and around its yards.
Over time its distribution systems have become more complex, according to MSC ICT infrastructure manager Tamara Lievens.
"Managing the requirements for the TOS application across two data centers, six physical distribution locations and 130 access switches is extremely difficult because it is made up of different components ranging from aspects like desktops, cameras for number plate recognition and container damage, badge readers and thin clients, just to name a few," Lievens said.
She said MSC’s primary application for its TOS is made up for a number of smaller programs, making managing and troubleshooting difficult and creating network related problems.
The new visibility, provided by Visual Network System’s visual Performance Manager, allows MSC to have a full view of its applications environment as well as service quality, while quickly isolating the root cause of performance issues, Lievens said.
