Server Farm Realty (SFR) has partnered with NantWorks, a US company developing advanced computing infrastructure for healthcare, science and media applications. SFR will provide data centers for NantWorks’ technologies.
NantWorks’ founder is Patrick Soon-Shiong, a scientist and entrepreneur listed on the Forbes Billionaires list, who is also founder of Fresenius and Abraxis BioScience, major medical-equipment and pharmaceutical companies, respectively.
NantWorks’ vision is to converge next-generation vision, object and voice-recognition technologies with ultra-low-power semiconductors, supercomputing and advanced networks to revolutionize healthcare, commerce and digital entertainment, according to the company’s website.
SFR president and CEO Avner Papouchado said the company’s data centers will enable NantWorks “to run and support a nationwide network to quickly and easily scale to meet its growing requirements.”
Soon-Shiong said management, storage and analysis of massive data sets required by genomic medicin or augmented intelligence was one of the great challenges of our time. “NantWorks is addressing that challenge and Server Farm is a vital part of our solution,” he said.
Soon-Shiong’s non-profit Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Advanced Health oversees National LambdaRail, a high-performance 12,000-mile fiber-optic network that links a number of US research institutiosn to support “big science projects”.
The institute is working to connect medical-research centers, sequencing centers and hospitals to the network to create a national health-information infrastructure.
SFR operates five data centers in Washington State, California, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
