Brazilian operator Scala Data Center is using an inflatable tent to ensure that construction on a data center in Tamboré, São Paulo, is not held up by bad weather.
The canvas dome, apparently provided by Piustelli Pelz of São Paulo, is held up by air pressure, and provides enough dry space inside for earth movers and other equipment to operate.
"Not even Mother Nature will deviate Scala Data Centers from the commitment to our customer’s success," said Scala CEO Marcus Peigo on LinkedIn. "May the rainy season come…foundation of our Tamboré Campus SGRUTB10 will keep as planned."
The data center will have 36MW of capacity designed for high-density AI. Peigo says it is the first facility in Latam to be built under a weather-proof dome.
LinkedIn comments say the supplier of the canvas dome tent is Pistelli Pelz. DCD has reached out to Scala and Pistelli to confirm this.
Scala was founded in 2020, and has been busy recently. The company has nine data centers in operation. Four are located at the Tamboré Campus, while the others are in São Paulo, Campinas (São Paulo state, Brazil), São João de Meriti (Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil), Curauma (Chile), Tepotzotlán (Mexico), and Porto Alegre.
In December, the company opened its Porto Alegre facility, and in November 2023, it issued $215m in green debenture, to finance more growth.
The company says it will have a footprint of 500MW within the next five years. The company was formed by DigitalBridge.
