Samsung Electronics said it's expecting to see a third consecutive quarter of record-breaking profit, with the South Korean chip maker reporting preliminary Q2 operating profit of 89.4 trillion won ($58.4 billion).

This figure represents a Year-on-Year increase of more than 1,800 percent, with the growth for the three-month period of April to June primarily driven by demand for AI memory chips.

Sales for the quarter were 171 trillion won ($113bn), up from 133.9 trillion won ($88.5bn) the previous quarter and more than double the figure posted by the company for Q2 2025.

The forecast comes ahead of Samsung’s full Q2 earnings report, which will be released later this month.

Despite the record-breaking results, Samsung’s second quarter has not been without its challenges. While the company saw its market value hit $1 trillion for the first time in May, Samsung also spent much of the three-month period engaged in negotiations with the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU).

Unionized workers at Samsung’s South Korean facilities voted in March to launch an 18-day general strike after talks with the company broke down. Employees have been asking for improved transparency with regard to how performance-based bonuses are calculated, in addition to the removal of a cap on bonuses and a seven percent wage increase.

The planned strike action was suspended in late May after a tentative agreement between the company and the NSEU was reached.

Elsewhere this week, it was reported that Samsung is planning to launch its floating data centers in the second quarter of 2028.
