Salesforce.com said it plans a December migration for its Asia Pacific customers into a new data center it is building in Japan this year.
Salesforce said in a press release that it planned to open its new Tokyo data center in November. The facility is currently undergoing testing.
It is building the data center with NTT Communications ÔÇô both companies hope that by having a local presence in Japan they can further support cloud development in the country, where some of Salesforce.com's largest customers, such as Japan Post, Sompo Japan and Fast Retailing, reside.
Australian customers may not be as happy about the migration as Japanese companies, however.
Salesforce.com currently operates in APAC from a data center in Singapore, but in recent times has come under pressure to set up local operations Down Under to help companies deal with data regulation issues.
According to news website Delimiter.com, Salesforce.com has emailed a number of Australian customers alerting them of the shift, which will take place during a "standard maintenance weekend" planned for early December.
Salesforce.com has made considerable investments in Japan in recent times.
It committed about 223m yen to Toyota Media Service Co to build a private social network for Toyota customers as part of an alliance with the vehicle manufacturer.
It also plans to invest in Netyear Group Corporation ÔÇô an e-marketing and business consulting service for large enterprises in Japan.
"Salesforce.com has been investing in Japanese start-ups since October 2010, when it announced a strategic investment in marketing automation firm Synergy Marketing," Salesforce.com said.
