Canadian mobile operator Rogers Communications has launched its satellite-to-mobile service in Canada.

The telco announced the launch of Rogers Satellite earlier this week, noting that the D2D service will cover all of the country.

Rogers' launch of its satellite service follows a beta trial in July, when it trialed a free beta text messaging service, including text-to-911.

“We’re proud to be the first and only provider in the country to offer this ground-breaking technology so Canadians can stay connected. The launch of Rogers Satellite builds on our legacy of innovative firsts and bringing the best technology to Canadians,” said Tony Staffieri, president and CEO, Rogers.

Staffieri noted that during the beta trial, more than one million satellite text messages were sent.

Rogers adds that its satellite service supports a number of apps, including WhatsApp, Google Maps, AccuWeather, X, and CalTopo.

The carrier also launched satellite-to-mobile for IoT businesses, with the service aimed at supporting some of the country's most remote areas.

Applications include fleet and asset tracking along remote highways and rail corridors, plus automated sensors for sectors like forestry and mining.

Rogers Satellite is available to sign up for CA$15 per month ($10.87), with beta trial participants receiving a $5 per month discount for the first 12 months.

The carrier said it plans to extend the service to support data and voice services, which include 911 voice services.
