Bitcoin mining firm Riot Platforms has acquired an additional 238 acres at its Corsicana campus in Texas.
The latest land acquisition adds to the existing 620 acres at the Corsicana site, taking the data center campus to a total of 858 acres.
The site is currently equipped with 400MW of power for Bitcoin mining, while the company’s long-term plans involve taking the site’s full capacity to a total of 1GW.
According to the Riot’s July 2025 production and operations update, the fully powered 1GW site will give the company the flexibility to accommodate various development plans. The company’s CEO, Jason Les, stated:
“Collectively, Riot now owns 858 acres in Corsicana, giving us the flexibility to accommodate various data center designs and development plans, which we are aggressively pursuing in order to be best positioned to fully utilize the 1.0 GW of power available at our Corsicana Facility,” said Les.
Those plans apparently involve allocating a majority of the site’s power to high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.
The pivot to HPC/AI was first mentioned in February amid a changeover at the boardroom level, which saw former directors Hannah Cho and Hubert Marleau retire from the board.
Three new board members were appointed at the time: Doug Mouton, the former senior engineer lead of data center design engineering and construction at Meta, and former VP of global data center delivery at Microsoft; Jaime Leverton, the former CEO of Hut 8 Mining Corp; and Michael Turner, president of real estate investor Oxford Properties Group.
A total of 600MW is expected to be allocated to HPC and AI workloads. As described in a recent form 10-Q filing with the SEC: “The company strengthened its execution capacity by recruiting critical talent and launching a scalable data center platform to support the initial phase of development, designated for AI/HPC applications at the Corsicana facility, representing an initial 600MW of AI/HPC capacity ("AI/HPC Phase I”).”
In June, Jonathan Gibbs, former EVP at Prime Data Centers, was appointed Riot Platform’s new chief data center officer.
The new appointees were purportedly brought in to help oversee Riot’s conversion of Bitcoin mining assets to potential HPC/AI use-cases.
