Ribbon Communications has launched a portfolio of rapidly deployable networking and compute platforms designed for defense agencies, critical infrastructure operators, communications providers, and emergency response organizations that need to restore connectivity during disruptions or operate in remote environments.
The Network in a Box (NiaB) packages networking, communications, and compute capabilities into portable, ruggedized systems that can be deployed when existing infrastructure is unavailable, damaged, or insufficient. Ribbon said the solutions are available in multiple form factors, ranging from suitcase-sized portable units to transportable data center configurations housed in large industrial enclosures.
The systems are designed to provide local networking independence, allowing organizations to establish communications and continue operations without depending on existing carrier or enterprise networks.
Ribbon said the platform supports both voice and data services and can connect through multiple networking and access technologies. One feature of the platform is zero-touch deployment, which allows systems to be activated and configured without requiring an existing network connection.
The company is positioning the solution for a range of use cases, including disaster recovery, military operations, critical infrastructure restoration, and temporary network deployments. Specific applications include restoring communications for service providers and Internet service providers, supporting utility and transportation operators during outages, enabling connectivity for first responders, and providing transportable data center infrastructure for remote locations.
The portfolio also includes configurations designed for cellular network restoration, which Ribbon refers to as “5G in a Box,” as well as multi-access backhaul recovery and network survivability scenarios.
Ribbon’s announcement emphasized the resiliency aspects of the platform, including redundant networking components, independent power and cooling systems in larger deployments, and the ability to operate in challenging environments. According to the company, the technology has been deployed by military organizations across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
The vendor also highlighted its use in disaster response efforts, including deployments supporting emergency operations following the 2023 earthquake in Turkey.
The launch reflects growing demand for portable edge infrastructure that combines networking, communications, and compute capabilities in a single platform. As mission-critical organizations place greater emphasis on operational resilience, vendors are packaging traditionally fixed infrastructure into transportable systems that can be deployed wherever connectivity is needed.
