Telefonica is consolidating about 100 of its data centers into six large facilities, according to a Spanish government spokesperson.

According to a report on news site Diario de Alcala, two of these data centers will be in Europe (Madrid and Prague) while the remaining four will be built in Latin America.

The Tecnoalcala science and technology park in the town of Alcala de Henares (35 kilometers from Madrid, Spain) will be the site for the first data center build.

A Madrid government spokesperson confirmed the news to the Journal of Alcala, a local newspaper. 

The center in Tecnoalcala will be used as the company’s build example. Telefonica said it plans to invest about 300 million euros in this first data center, which will require the work of 100 engineers. The building will occupy about 80,000 sq m and will be built out in two phases.

Its proximity to Madrid, the small price of the land at the location and the development of the technology park all led to Telefonica’s final decision on the Madrid location, according to the report.

Telefonica has not yet officially confirmed this report.
