The enterprise market for Ethernet products has had shown strong growth in the year's second quarter, with higher revenues in both Ethernet switching and routing segments, according to the IT market research firm IDC.
The worldwide market for Ethernet switches grew 32.7 percent year-over-year, and the routing market grew 11 percent.
Rohit Mehra, director of IDC's Enterprise Communications Infrastructure division, said good performance in the second quarter followed an "exceptional" first-quarter performance for Ethernet products in the enterprise.
"As seen in previous years, the second calendar quarter builds on the performance of the first, which is what the market delivered, showing strong year-over-year growth from the slowdown the market witnessed in 2009," Mehra said in a statement.
"The continued adoption of PoE (Power over Ethernet) and gigabit Ethernet is also being helped by the underlying networking drivers ÔÇô the growth of voice and video over IP applications, network-attached devices, virtualization, and cloud computing," he added.
In the Ethernet switch market, more than one million 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports were shipped during the quarter, something that has never happened, according to Cindy Borovick, VP of Enterprise Communications Infrastructure and Datacenter Networks at IDC.
The quarter saw an 87.9 percent year-over-year increase in 10GbE switch revenue. Borovick said adoption of the technology has been driven mostly by the build-out of data centers, campuses and cloud infrastructure.
Cisco's Ethernet switch market share grew to 65.8 percent from 62.8 percent one year ago but decreased from 68.3 percent in the first quarter of 2010. Cisco's market share in the service provider router market during the second quarter was flat year-over-year: 46.1 percent.
Revenues in the Enterprise router market were marginally lower than during the first quarter but grew eight percent year-over-year. According to IDC, the sector is still "soft and off by around 25 percent from the record levels seen in 2007 and 2008."
Service-provider router revenue accounts for nearly 74 percent of the total router market and includes both core and edge routers.
