Data center services provider RagingWire announced Wednesday that its second data center in Sacramento, California, was awarded LEED Gold certification by the US Green Building Council.

Features of the facility that earned it the second-highest tier of the council’s award for environmentally-conscious design, construction and operation, include minimized water usage, energy efficiency, environmental monitoring and enhanced water treatment.

Rick Fedrizzi, president and CEO of USGBC, said the certification demonstrated “tremendous” leadership in green building.

“The urgency of USGBC's mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and RagingWire serves as a prime example of just how much we can accomplish in the industry,” he said.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is USGBC’s rating system for construction projects that minimize their impact on the environment. LEED points are earned by employing energy efficient designs, sourcing local materials and maximizing the use of recycled materials, among many other requirements.

The highest tier of the award is LEED Platinum, while LEED Gold is the second highest.

The new 250,000 sq ft data center that received the award is the company’s second in California’s capital. Its first one measures 220,000 sq ft. RagingWire also has a 140,000 sq ft data center in northern Virginia, which it bought in 2011.
