Rackspace reported high annual revenue growth rate for the third quarter and announced it had completed the roll-out of infrastructure cloud services it built on the open-source cloud platform OpenStack, whose development it lead together with the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The San Antonio, Texas-based provider of data center services said its third-quarter revenue was US$336m, up 27% year over year. Its net income for the quarter was $27m, or 36% higher than its income for the same three-month period one year ago.
The quarter brought a number of important developments for Rackspace besides revenue growth, however. Completing the OpenStack roll-out was one of the biggest news.
“Rackspace just open-sourced the Cloud,” CEO Lanham Napier said. “We're excited to report that the roll-out of our new Open Cloud platform, built on OpenStack, is finally complete.”
The list of OpenStack-based services includes cloud servers, monitoring, private-cloud software and application services.
Rackspace has also expanded its physical infrastructure into Australia during the quarter, launching a data center in Sydney’s Erskine Park. In addition to its traditional data center services, the company is planning to offer its Open Cloud services supported out of this facility as well.
The company has also made it onto Fortune magazine’s list of fastest-growing companies in the third quarter.
