The large US hosting company Rackspace has signed a long-term lease for more than 58,000 sq ft of raised floor space at Digital Realty Trust’s data center campus in Richardson, Texas (Dallas metro).
Rackspace is leasing half of the space for 15 years commencing in August 2012 and the other half, also for 15 years, which will commence in August 2015, according to a document Rackspace filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The deal was first reported by Data Center Knowledge.
The lease will cost Rackspace about US$134m total for the entire 15-year term. There is an option to extend the lease of each of the two chunks of space by an additional 10 years once the initial 15 years is up.
Digital bought a controlling interest in the Richardson property – formerly called Collins Technology Park – in September 2011. The buyer renamed the seven-building campus into Digital Realty Trust Datacenter Park – Dallas.
The buildings range from 15,000 sq ft to 250,000 sq ft in size, totaling nearly 800,000 sq ft. The property, which features a dedicated 40MW electrical substation, also has multiple sites suitable for greenfield development. The substation’s capacity can be expanded up to 125MW.
San Antonio, Texas-based Rackspace is one of the biggest hosting and cloud companies in the US. More than 74,000 servers were running in the company’s data centers as of early November, when the company reported its third-quarter 2011 earnings.
During 2011, Rackspace also leased 7.9MW of data center capacity in Elk Grove Village (Chicago metro), according to Grubb & Ellis. It also has data centers in San Antonio, Herndon and Ashburn, Virginia, London and Slough, UK, and in Hong Kong.
