Hosting and cloud-services provider Rackspace has confirmed that it is behind the company that bought a 99-acre property at the Port of Morrow, near Boardman, Oregon.

The company bought the land to potentially build a data center there, but has not made any final plans for the property, Oregon Live reported. Company spokeswoman Rachel Ferry wrote in an email to Live that if it needs to expand its capacity on the US west coast, this is the site where it will do it.

“We have identified some obvious benefits to adding capacity in the west coast region and we find the benefits to be compelling,” Ferry said. “We have taken steps to help ensure that, if we ultimately determine that it is in our best interest to build a data center on the west coast that we can execute on that strategy.”

The company that bought the land for US$2m was Boardman Acquisition, a Rackspace holding company. The hosting firm has the option to add 100 acres to the development project if necessary.

Rackspace has a 15-year tax-break agreement if it chooses to build a data center on the property.

News that the company was potentially planning a data center construction project in Oregon first surfaced earlier this month, when DJC Oregon reported that Rackspace may have been behind Boardman’s land-purchase deal with the Port of Morrow.

This week, Rackspace announced a plan to establish a data center in Sydney, Australia, within a Digital Realty Trust facility. This data center will serve customers in the Asia-Pacific markets.
