Equinix is in the initial stages of planning a AU$91m ($73m) data center in Australia’s business capital, with its consultancy and architecture partners having jointly submitted a proposal to the City of Sydney, according to The Urban Developer.
The suggested location for the facility is a 25,780 square meter property in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Alexandria, a few miles south of the city’s central business district.
Settling in down under
If approved, the project will mark Equinix’s fifth data center in the country’s largest metropolitan area, and its 16th in Australia.
The site will be linked to the four neighboring data centers, which are located just south of the proposed facility, via a private fiber loop.
Late last year, Equinix acquired local colocation provider Metronode for AU$1 billion (US$792 million), taking over the company’s five data centers in Sydney, Melbourne and Illawarra.
The company provides colocation and interconnection services for more than 9,500 customers worldwide, with over 180 data centers spanning five continents.
Its desire to increase footprint in Australia is a reflection of a rapidly expanding data center market which has taken off in the past five years, with investment from colocation and cloud providers alike, and growing interest in developing the country’s edge offering.
