A large data center campus is being proposed outside Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Stokes County board of commissioners is due to meet next week to discuss an amendment to the county’s zoning ordinance to include data centers as permitted in the heavy manufacturing conditional zoning classification.

The county is concurrently set to decide on a rezoning request to develop a data center on a site along US 311 and Tuttle Road in Walnut Cove.

Known as Project Delta, the site would cover 1,800 acres close to Duke Energy’s Belews Creek energy plant site.

Full details are unclear, but the data center campus would total “several hundred megawatts” and be served by a new dedicated substation, according to the project website. The site, which will include a closed-loop cooling system, may include its own on-site generation capacity, though details haven’t been shared.

Walnut Cove is a town in Stokes County, some 18 miles north of Winston-Salem and 32 miles northwest of Greensboro.

The land is owned by local developer David Couch, CEO of real estate firm Blue Ridge Companies. Couch is working with real estate developer Engineered Land Solutions for Project Delta.

The Stokes County planning board voted to recommend against the plan on December 4. The county commission had previously voted against an application to develop a Duke Energy solar farm on the site.

An Action Network petition against the proposal has garnered more than 2,600 signatures at the time of writing. The petition, from Clean Water for North Carolina, calls the project a “threat to local history and heritage.”
