OpenAI missed internal targets for new users and revenue, as executives grow increasingly concerned about its ballooning compute commitments, the Wall Street Journal reports.
CFO Sarah Friar told company leaders that she is worried the company might not be able to pay for future computing contracts if revenue doesn’t grow fast enough, the publication claims.
“This is ridiculous,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Friar said in a joint statement. “We are totally aligned on buying as much compute as we can and working hard on it together every day.”
The company this week reiterated that it had secured 10GW of AI infrastructure capacity ahead of its 2029 target. It has pulled back from Stargate projects in Texas, the UK, and Norway.
The generative AI firm fell short of an internal target to reach one billion weekly active users for its ChatGPT service for year-end.
OpenAI plans to go public later this year.
