UK network operator O2 has completed 5G upgrades at Wembley Stadium.

The carrier has deployed its 5G Standalone (5G SA) network at the stadium, which will host this weekend's FA Cup Final.

O2 claims that 90,000 match-goers will be able to stream, share, and connect in real-time during Saturday's game between Crystal Palace and Manchester City.

The operator has also installed seven new small cells outside of the stadium and has upgraded two cell towers in the area.

“Wembley is one of the UK’s most iconic venues and this summer promises to be one of its biggest in living memory, from the FA Cup Final to the long-awaited return of Oasis. Our investment in and around the stadium is designed to give a huge capacity boost to O2 customers attending these events, so they have the best possible experience," said Dr. Robert Joyce, director of mobile access engineering at O2.

The upgrades are part of Virgin Media's O2 Mobile Transformation Plan, announced in March.

As part of this strategy, the company outlined plans to invest £700 million ($924m) into its mobile network this year to improve its reliability, speed, and coverage across the UK. The figure equates to around £2 million ($2.64m) a day.

This includes expanding 4G and 5G coverage and ramping up small cell rollouts in dense urban areas.

Wembley Stadium is sponsored by one of O2's rivals, EE.

Earlier this year, Virgin Media O2 deployed its 5G network at Twickenham Stadium, the home of English Rugby.

The company launched its 5G SA network in February of last year. 5G SA network is not reliant on older mobile generations, solely uses a 5G core network, and is based on the cloud.

Elsewhere this week, Verizon announced it has been chosen by the NFL team Buffalo Bills as the exclusive wireless telecommunications partner of the new Highmark Stadium, set to open next year.

As part of the tie-up, Verizon will provide its 5G mobile network at the 60,000-capacity stadium.
