The following content is from an older version of this website, and may not display correctly.The State of New York has teamed up with a large northeastern energy company to provide financial and technical assistance to hospitals that undertake projects to increase energy efficiency of their data centers and other facilities.
The program, titled "Energy Efficiency for Health," will support energy efficiency improvements in data center operations, as well as lighting, heating, cooling, insulation, retro-commissioning and other energy-intensive operations. It is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority together with National Grid.
"Combining the energy expertise and resources of National Grid and NYSERDA will provide hospitals with the best options possible to meet their growing energy needs," NYSERDA President and CEO Francis Murray said in a statement.
"This important partnership will give hospitals targeted and individualized energy solutions to help cut their energy costs by as much as 20 percent and allow them to focus more resources on patient care and support where they belong."
National Grid is an energy-delivery company that serves about 3.3m customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. In addition to owning more than 4,000MW of electricity generation, it is also the largest distributor of natural gas in northeastern US.
NYSERDA and the National Grid have earmarked up to $10m in funding for energy efficiency initiatives that they say will generate $5m in energy savings per year. The program will provide targeted individualized technical assistance.
About 75 of the 100 largest hospitals in National Grid's service area within the state have been selected to participate. Hospitals were selected based on type, size, number of beds, age and prior energy-efficiency activities.
Scope of the program will include assistance in identifying efficiency opportunities, incentives for retrofit and new construction projects that improve energy efficiency. The organizations will also provide installation support and help with outreach, education and marketing.
