Nvidia plans to invest up to $5 billion in Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), an AI firm co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

Alongside the investment, SSI will deploy Nvidia's Vera Rubin CPU-GPU systems, increasing the company's compute "by an order of magnitude."

“Ilya has pioneered fundamental breakthroughs at the foundation of modern AI, beginning with AlexNet,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia. “We are excited to see what new breakthroughs SSI will discover powered by our Vera Rubin platform.”

Ilya Sutskever, SSI cofounder and CEO, added: “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big Nvidia computer will let us do so. We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Jensen and the Nvidia team, and we are confident that our big bet on the Vera Rubin platform will take us to the next level.”

Founded in the US and Israel back in 2024, SSI has historically relied on Google's TPUs to power its research. Nvidia has previously invested in businesses that used competing compute hardware, alongside a promise to use the company's GPUs.

SSI bills itself as the "world’s first straight-shot SSI lab," with a plan not to release any products until it can deploy a safe superintelligence, rather than the regular model updates found at OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceXAI.
