Two Northern Ireland councils could be about to combine resources for a data center worth more than £100m which will sit at the border of each.

The north's largest city council ÔÇô Derry ÔÇô and Donegal County Council, according to a report in the Derry Journal, could announce the new data center in a matter of weeks.

The paper cited sources close to the councils, which were not named.

The sources said the data center would make the most of the Project Kelvin high speed broadband network, which will see a submarine cable connected to an existing transatlantic cable 22 miles off the north coast of Ireland.

They said they councils were planning to power the data center using wind.

The data center could also mark the growth of new science and technology businesses in the area, as the councils have considered connecting the project to a technology park which will further make use of Project Kelvin and wind power in the region.

It is also hoped that insurance and financial organizations will be attracted to the region thanks to its high-speed connections.
