The following content is from an older version of this website, and may not display correctly.Bevan Slattery, the Australian entrepreneur who co-founded the country's large Internet exchange company Pipe Networks, is entering the data center provider business by starting a new venture called NextDC. Slattery will start with two data centers in Melbourne and Brisbane, where he is investing $20m total to build out about 21,500 sq ft of data center space in each market.
NextDC has initiated acquisition process of properties in each of the two locations, according to a news release.
"I believe there has been no better time to invest in premium data centers than now," Slattery said in a statement. "With the unprecedented growth in Internet traffic, data consumption and storage throughout the world, combined with the incredible demand for power and cooling, legacy data centers cannot cope with the requirements nor deliver the energy efficiency benefits that a purpose built green-field data center can."
He said the two facilities will be "concrete bunkers with very smart brains and a green heart." Each of the data centers will be expandable up to about 108,000 sq ft.
