New York, N.Y., colocation, Web hosting and managed services provider New York Internet is planning to open a New Jersey data center in October. The company says its second data center will be mostly used for disaster recovery and business continuity services for its existing clients but will have room to provide its core package of services to new clients.

The Bridgewater, N.J., building is about 40,000 square feet and the first phase to come online next month will provide about 27,000 square feet of raised floor, NYI VP of Operations Phillip Koblence said. The local utility will make 5 MW of power available immediately and up to 20 MW will be available as needed. The facility will accommodate power densities of up to 150 W per square foot.

A number of carriers will provide connectivity to the facility from day one and more will be coming online in the future. "There's two fiber entries to the facility and it's lit (from) day one with Verizon, AT&T, Optimum Lightpath and AboveNet in addition to new fiber providers that we're going to be adding over time," Koblence said.

NYI began searching for an appropriate off-site location about two years ago and started negotiations over the Bridgewater building at 999 Frontier Rd. for about one year. The facility was previously occupied by a data center, although Koblence declined to disclose who its operator used to be.

The company chose the building because of the existing data center infrastructure, availability of power and fiber infrastructure and its location about 40 miles away from New York City.

NYI's New York data center provides about 35,000 square feet of raised floor and the company has operated it since 2003, Koblence said. NYI has been operating in the city since 1996.
