IT outsourcing service provider SunGuard announced construction of a new data center in the Sacramento, Calif., area, about 120 miles away from Silicon Valley. In addition to the Sacramento market, with the new facility, the company is targeting customers from the Valley and from the rest of the Bay Area region, which includes San Francisco.

Wayune, Penn.-based SunGuard will use the data center to provide colocation, managed services, disaster recovery and business continuity. The list will also include private cloud infrastructure as a service.

"This new facility demonstrates SunGard's sustained investment in expanding its infrastructure in California, to deliver services scalability and process expertise to customers," SunGuard VP of Operations for the Availability Services division Lance Hanchey said in a statement.

After construction of the initial phase, the 69,000 square foot building in the town of Rancho Cordova will house 28,000 square feet of raised floor. The first phase is expected to come online in May 2010. Two electrical feeds will bring a total of about 6 MW of power into the data center.
