New software to be used by the Tasmanian Government will improve the efficiency of current IT infrastructure, reduce operating costs and use less energy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, Lisa Singh has said.
The special virtualisation technology will be supplied by VMware, a global leader in the technology, and its Hobart-based reseller AlphaWest, under a $1.2 million contract.
"This is a clever investment as it will result in a huge improvement in the efficiency of the Government's IT infrastructure, Ms Singh said.
The new software will reduce the Government's environmental impact by consolidating IT infrastructure throughout the State.
"In a big datacenter, an average computer server typically runs at only 15% capacity, Ms Singh said.
"The new software acts like an intermediary. It will create virtual servers that will enable the existing physical hardware to run at 50% to 60% capacity.
"Our partnership with VMware's software is in line with the State Government's commitment to reduce the environmental impact of our activities.
"As well as using less energy, the system will be more robust, with an improved ability to recover data in the event of a system failure, Ms Singh said.
The software will be rolled out across all State Government agencies.
