Storage vendor NetApp has teamed up with Microsoft  to provide a joint solution to hosting service providers to help them set up cloud-based services that can offer small and medium-size businesses enterprise-level data protection at a price-level affordable for them.

NetApp will deliver Microsoft’s Dynamic Data Center Toolkit, integrated with its data protection solutions to customers, according to a NetApp news release. The toolkit provides sample code and guidance for providers looking to build cloud-based services based on Microsoft’s server OS Windows Server 2008 R2 with the Hyper-V virtualization system and System Center – Microsoft’s IT infrastructure management suite.

"SMBs are demanding enterprise-class disaster recovery solutions, and hosting service providers are in a tremendous position to fill that demand as more SMBs move toward hosted IT services," said in a statement John Zanni, GM of worldwide hosting for the communications sector at Microsoft.

"We're pleased to be working with NetApp as part of the Dynamic Data Center Alliance to enable hosting service providers to offer these disaster recovery solutions, and to take another step to move beyond commoditized hosting services to become full-service IT providers to their customers."

The NetApp data protection capabilities that will be integrated with the Dynamic Data Center Toolkit include disaster recovery, clustered failover and backup and recovery. The solution will also offer NetApp’s storage efficiency capabilities.

Microsoft announced a number of new partnerships on Monday, including an expansion of its relationship with HP to build and sell a Windows Azure platform appliance for deployment of private clouds.
