A new data center that provides IT services to State of Montana government agencies has deployed the Kyoto Wheel, an innovative cooling system by the Dutch company Kyoto Cooling that has yet to see widespread adoption by the data center industry.

According to a Helena Independent Record report, the state expects the cooling system to result in big energy-cost savings. Montana CIO Dick Clark told the publication that the cooling system will allow it to lower cooling costs from $0.5-1.5 per $1 of power consumed to $0.1 per $1.

The solution does not use chilled water, cooling warm air by pushing it through its specially designed wheel, made up of a loosely wrapped aluminum coil. Air is cooled as it passes over the coil’s surface. The Montana State data center has three of these wheels, 16ft in diameter each. There is an option to deploy a fourth one in the future if it becomes necessary.

The system relies, to a large extent, on cool outside air.
