Micron has announced plans to invest up to $3 billion to support the US semiconductor ecosystem, from supply chain to manufacturing.
In a statement, the company said the investment “reflects its commitment” to strengthening the supply of manufacturing materials, improving long-term flexibility, and supporting the growing demand for memory and storage.
The planned investment will also see Micron provide GlobalWafers with $500 million in strategic financing to support the development of its GlobalWafers America 300mm raw silicon wafer manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas. The deal will see the companies enter into a 10-year supply agreement that will provide Micron with access to “significant” raw silicon wafer capacity in support of its long-term manufacturing plans.
The partners will also collaborate on the development of next-generation wafer technologies and process innovations to support future semiconductor manufacturing requirements, Micron said. The transaction is subject to customary approvals and closing conditions.
In addition to the partnership with GlobalWafers, Micron said it had further increased its anticipated US semiconductor investment, with the figure now totaling $250 billion through 2035.
Micron had originally planned to invest around $170bn to boost its chip manufacturing efforts in the US, but announced it was increasing the figure to $200bn in June 2025. At the time, the company said the additional investment would be used to support the construction of a second memory fab in Boise, Idaho, two additional fabs in New York, and the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Manassas, Virginia.
Under the Biden Administration, Micron was awarded $6.165 billion in direct funding as part of the CHIPS and Science Act to support the construction of three new memory chip fabs in Onondaga County, New York, and Boise, Idaho. The company had originally pledged to invest approximately $100bn in New York and $25bn in Idaho, creating approximately 20,000 jobs.
The Department of Commerce said that as a result of the additional investment, a further $275 million in incremental CHIPS Act direct funding has been awarded to Micron.
Elsewhere, Micron announced that the first facility on its new $100bn semiconductor fab campus in Onondaga County was a quarter ahead of schedule. Consisting of four fabs when fully built, the so-called megafab is expected to be complete by Q3 2041 and will be the largest semiconductor facility in the US.
Per Micron’s original schedule, Fab 1 will be equipment-ready by Q2 2028. Operations at the first facility are slated to begin in early 2029. Fabs 2, 3, and 4 are expected to be operational by late 2030, 2035, and 2041, respectively.
"As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, data and memory are foundational to the modern economy — and Micron is increasing our US investments to more than $250 billion through 2035 to meet that moment," said Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron chairman, president, and CEO.
"I want to thank President Trump, Secretary Lutnick, Governor Hochul, Senator Schumer, County Executive McMahon, and our partners across government and the community for their leadership. Reaching this milestone ahead of schedule reflects the speed and determination behind this project. Micron is proud to bring the world's most advanced memory manufacturing to Central New York, strengthen the domestic semiconductor supply chain, and help secure America's technology leadership for generations to come."
