Meta has signed a maritime fuel offtake agreement with Danish shipping company Norden to acquire carbon offset credits.

The emission solution works by burning biofuel on a Norden-operated vessel, with the emission reduction subsequently allocated to Meta using a book and claim chain of custody system.

“Our book and claim solution allows customers of marine transportation across the globe to take advantage of emissions reductions from biofuels, even when biofuels are not physically available to be bunkered on a specific trading route or voyage,” said Anne Jensen, COO at Norden.

Norden will facilitate the emission reduction through Smart Freight Centre’s Voluntary Market Bases Measure Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting.

The emissions reduction is authenticated by an independent verifier, Normec Verifavia, and transacted on an external registry through 123Carbon.

Devon Lake, head of net zero strategy at Meta, said: “Innovative solutions such as those that Norden is providing are critical for companies like Meta to decarbonize our value chain at the pace and scale required to achieve our emissions reduction targets.”

Meta signed several carbon removal agreements in 2024 to decarbonize its value chain. In October, Meta announced plans to invest up to $35 million in carbon removal projects over the next 12 months.

Before this, in September, Meta signed a reforestation-based carbon removal deal with Investment bank BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group.

Meta is also part of Frontier Climate – a consortium that makes aggregated purchases of carbon capture credits from several companies, projects, and technologies – alongside Google.

Elsewhere, the company is developing its own direct air capture technology to capture carbon at its data centers.
