American academic medical center Mayo Clinic plans to trial generative AI technology on Google Cloud.
The nonprofit first announced a 10-year strategic partnership with Google back in 2019.
Mayo Clinic will start by using Google's Enterprise Search on Generative AI App Builder (Gen App Builder), with the aim of improving the efficiency of clinical workflows. Enterprise Search on Gen App Builder is meant to be able to understand data across dispersed documents, databases, and intranets, helping healthcare professionals use information from various sources, including medical records, research papers, and clinical guidelines.
“Our prioritization of patient safety, privacy, and ethical considerations, means that generative AI can have a significant and positive impact on how we work and deliver healthcare,” Cris Ross, Mayo Clinic’s chief information officer, said.
“Google Cloud’s tools have the potential to unlock sources of information that typically aren’t searchable in a conventional manner, or are difficult to access or interpret, from a patient’s complex medical history to their imaging, genomics, and labs. Accessing insights more quickly and easily could drive more cures, create more connections with patients, and transform healthcare.”
Google said that the platform is now ready to support HIPAA compliance.
“Generative AI has the potential to transform healthcare by enhancing human interactions and automating operations like never before,” Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud CEO, said.
“Mayo Clinic is a world leader in leveraging AI for good, and they are a critical partner as we identify responsible ways to bring this transformative technology to healthcare.”
