MLB Advanced Media, the interactive media and internet company of Major League Baseball, has expanded its contact with Level 3 Communications to include data center services for the media company's digital products, such as MLB.TV live video streaming website.
Level 3 will provide the services out of its data center in Omaha, Nebraska, which will become the league's first major technological footprint outside of New York. The facility will house MLB's infrastructure and media library and provide access to Level 3's international network.
Joe Inzerillo, MLB's CTO, said the move was expected to support high-quality streaming of live video. “With millions of fans accessing the great content that is live baseball games every day, it's important MLBAM is able to not only accommodate that growth, but also continue to provide a superior viewing experience to our audience,” he said.
The services will support the archival, backhaul and internet video streaming needs of New York-based MLB's media properties and work in conjunction with Level 3's content delivery network (CDN) and internet services.
Level 3 operates more than 350 data centers in the US, Europe and Latin America, offering colocation, managed IT and hosting, virtual and cloud solutions. The centers are located directly on the provider's backbone.
