The company running the Brisbane Airport is revamping the airport’s IT infrastructure. It hired a contractor to build a private cloud on the platform that combines Cisco and EMC gear, as well as VMware’s virtualization software.
While the three companies have pre-integrated private-cloud solution called Vblock, the announcement did not include the brand name. The contractor doing the work for the Brisbane Airport Corp. (BAC) is Logicalis-owned Corpnet.
Jonathan Panell, enterprise solution specialist for Logicalis Queensland, said Corpnet had been working with BAC for a number of years and understood the organization’s technology and business challenges.
“The design and integration of leading technologies from Cisco, EMC and VMware provided the perfect combination of agility, technology and enablement to meet the requirements for BAC today and well into the future,” Panell said.
Hardware-wise, the solution combines Cisco’s Unified Compute System (UCS), Cisco Nexus switches and EMC VNX storage system. It is virtualized on VMware’s vSphere platform.
BAC expects the project to cut about 20% off data center power and cooling costs. The company’s infrastructure is currently virtualized on VMware ESX 3.5 – an implementation project that reduced the infrastructure’s physical footprint by 70 physical servers.
For storage, Corpnet has chosen EMC’s VNX 5300 solution, designed specifically for virtualized environments, the company said. The solution includes the storage vendor’s automated tiering technology called FAST, or Fully Automated Storage Tiering.
Brisbane Airport is a major Asia-Pacific aviation hub. There are 27 airlines, 420 businesses and 20,000 workers at the airport.
