Lockheed Martin, an aerospace, defense, and security company, is bringing Google's AI tools to its on-prem "AI factory."
Google's AI tools, including generative AI and Google's Gemini models, will be available within Lockheed Martin's "secure, on-premises and air-gapped environments," giving all personnel access.
According to the companies, this will enable the Lockheed Martin AI Factory team to use Google AI tools to help develop safe and secure solutions for sectors including aerospace, space exploration, and cybersecurity.
Initially, this will see the generative AI solutions integrated into Lockheed Martin's on-prem environment using Google Distributed Cloud.
"Collaborating with Google Public Sector to bring Gemini on–premises underscores our commitment to delivering cutting–edge, secure AI capabilities that directly support our mission–critical programs. This initiative equips our engineers with powerful tools—safely and at scale—to accelerate innovation in support of our business and critical missions," said Greg Forrest, VP of AI foundations and commercialization at Lockheed Martin.
"Our collaboration with Lockheed Martin is a testament to our joint commitment to bringing the power of generative AI to meet the needs of our public sector customers," said Jim Kelly, VP of federal, Google Public Sector. "We are proud to take yet another industry-leading step with Lockheed Martin to deploy the most advanced AI tools to support government agencies, while adhering to the absolute highest standards of security and data governance."
Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) is Google's on-prem Edge solution, which sees customers deploying Google hardware within their own data centers.
Google launched an air-gapped version of GDC - which is completely isolated from the wider Internet - in July 2024, enabling the running of Google's cloud infrastructure stack, including Kubernetes clusters, data security services, and Vertex AI platform. It has been deployed by the likes of the US Air Force.
Gemini models on GDC were announced in April of this year, with "public preview" set to start in Q3 2025. This was enabled by partnering with Nvidia to give customers access to the DGX B200 and HGX B200 systems.
According to Baxtel, Lockheed Martin has a data center in Denver, Colorado.
The Lockheed Martin AI factory has an Nvidia DGX SuperPOD deployment, according to an Nvidia blog post. The center was established in 2021.
Earlier this year, Lockheed Martin teamed up with Nokia and Verizon to integrate military-grade 5G solutions for Lockheed Martin's 5G.MIL Hybrid Base Station (HBS).
