LG Sinar Mas has broken ground on a data center in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The company is a joint venture between LG CNS, a South Korean data center service provider, and PT SMPlus Digital Investment, a digital infrastructure platform backed by Indonesian conglomerate Sinar Mas.

Announced in a LinkedIn post, SM+ said the SMX01 facility will open in 2026 and will be optimized for AI and high-density workloads featuring liquid cooling and reliable power.

Plans for the project were first announced in September 2024. At the time, the project was set to see $300 million of investment.

The IT capacity of SMX01 has not been shared, but a previous report about the scheme in Korea Economic Daily suggested it would offer an initial 18MW. This report also said Korea Investment Holdings would be part of the project, though there is no mention of this organization in the official Sinar Mas announcement.

Sinar Mas, which owns businesses in a wide range of markets, has previously partnered with K2 Data Centres to develop facilities in Jakarta.

Jakarta has emerged as a popular location for data center operators, with the likes of Digital Edge, NTT, Princeton Digital, STT GDC, EdgeConnex, AWS, and Equinix having a presence in the capital.
