Capacity has been "boosted" from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps.
"The upgraded network is up and running at 10 Gbps," Level 3 spokesman Vince Hancock said. "The upgrade was necessitated by a collaborative sharing arrangement the University of Wisconsin has with other universities - the University of Minnesota, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa - as well as an increase in usage by the University of Wisconsin itself."
Level 3 has been delivering services to WiscNet since 2004.
WiscNet is a non-profit organization that provides access to information and computing resources with emphasis on education, research and public service to its members, including public and private organizations.
"The dramatic increase in capacity will allow further information and resource sharing among education organizations, which are key pillars of WiscNet," WAN Strategist Michael Schlicht said in a statement. WiscNet has more than 400 member organizations that include most of the state's colleges and universities, library systems, school districts, some local governments, hospitals and non-profits and the State of Wisconsin itself.
